The Mittoni 4-in-1 PCMCIA adapter was introduced to replace the need for multiple adapters in the average digital camera enthusiast or PDA user's reading kit.  Why enforce the need to purchase three or four adapters when the lot could be done in one device?  The IC manufacturers certainly planned for this type of freedom.

The four in one flash card connector has to do more than simply accept multiple card designs -- it must also detect which type of card has been inserted and ensure excellent electrical contact is maintained over thousands of possible insertions.
