Problems with SanDisk SD on Palm

Description of Problem

- Palm m505 cannot recognize SanDisk 128MB Secure Digital card.
- Format on SanDisk 128MB SD card fails.
- Formatting the Secure Digital memory card leads to a 'never ending' hang format cycle.

Synopsis

This is a technical problem that is presently confined to SanDisk Secure Digital cards and is likely to be connected to the SD card controller which is a LinkUp Systems L7210 System-on-Chip.  It only occurs on the 128MB SD card, with lower capacities 16MB, 32MB and 64MB operating without issue.

Palm m125, m500 and m505s require a FATFS Update to be installed in order to recognize cards larger than 32MB.  This can be found under the download section of the palm website.

An in-depth technical enquiry was requested from SanDisk on the 11 February 2002.  Any updates or solution on using the SanDisk 128MB Secure Digital card on the Palm m125, m500 and m505 will be posted on this page.

Solution

There is presently no known solution to using SanDisk 128MB Secure Digital cards.

Lexar, Toshiba and Panasonic Secure Digital cards use the Toshiba-manufactured micro controller "TMP91CM26XB" that is a FBGA (Fine Ball Grid Array) mounted controller dedicated to Secure Digital SD memory.  This card WILL work with the Palm m125, m500 and m505 and therefore consumers should purchase this card if possible and return SanDisk 128MB Secure Digital cards to their reseller after consulting them on technical support.

Updates to a solution by SanDisk will be posted on this page.
