Samsung under Siege for Flash Memory (17th June 2003)

17th June 2003

A little over two weeks ago we wrote about the new <a href="http://www.mittoni.com.au/catalog/article_info.php/cArticlePath/1/articles_id/3">shortage of flash memory</a>, at that time just one week old.

Three weeks later and the manufacturers are suffering, really suffering.

The problem? Samsung can't meet the demand imposed by the fast growing consumer market.  Prices decreased a little over one month ago and demand grew even further.

It seems every product you turn toward now has been designed for flash memory.  And why not, it's cheap, reliable, retains data without batteries and is perfect for mobile electronics.  And here we go, video mobile telephones, greater use of PDA's, digital cameras, USB flash drives and MP3 players.

The good news?  We have new stock of 256MB CompactFlash cards arriving early next week, and 512MB the week after.  1GB cards are expected to be available shortly after.
